Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "Small minds
discuss people, average minds discuss events, and great minds
discuss ideas." But according to News 8 night side reporter
and fill-in anchor, Spencer Washburn, "It is exceptional
minds that can recognize and inspire all three." And it is
exceptional journalism that Spencer strives to bring to viewers
each day on News 8.
Growing up in Los Angeles, Spencer was ironically restricted from
watching the Hollywood-spun L.A. news by his parents, a psychologist
and a child development teacher. Perhaps this fostered his desire
to discover the forbidden, leading Spencer to eventually earn
a degree in Film and Television from Chapman University. With
an emphasis in Broadcast Journalism, Spencer put his education
to use with his first foray into the news business in Scottsbluff,
Nebraska.
"It was definitely a culture shock, but a learning experience
that can't be duplicated in a classroom," Spencer says. From
Nebraska, Spencer finally got to move back to his home state and
a position as the weekend anchor for KGET news in Bakersfield.
He credits his triumphant return to Southern California mostly
to luck, saying simply "I was in the right place at the right
time."
Spencer thanks his friends and family for their support in shaping
his life and career. He hopes to continue to learn while serving
the great San Diego County. "That's what I love about reporting,
you learn something new everyday," he says half smirking.
"Whether it's something you wanted to know, well that's another
question."
